April is Month of the Military Child; Purple Up Day: April 9th

Over 77,000 military-connected students are currently enrolled in Virginia’s public schools and the VDOE is joining school divisions and communities across the Commonwealth to celebrate military-connected students and their families.

Purple Up Day - Purple is the official color of the military child. It is a combination of all the colors of the United States Armed Forces. Suffolk Public Schools is asking our students and staff to wear purple on Wednesday, April 9th in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Education and other state agencies in recognition of Purple Up Day. This is an opportunity to honor military children from all branches of the military.

Join Us! SPS March of Dimes Campaign: March 24 - May 2

From March 24, 2025, to May 2, 2025, Suffolk Public Schools will participate in the March of Dimes campaign, a nationwide effort dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

SPS Media Specialists Attend the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) Conference

The Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) promotes and influences local and state policies that ensure school libraries are well-funded and fully staffed with full-time, certified school librarians and paraprofessionals to support student achievement. Our SPS Media Specialists who attended the Spring Conference to connect in our region and further expand their skills were (L to R): Rosario Conn (JYMS); Holly Saunders (NRHS); Kiley Miller (LHS); Ariel Ralph (KFMS); and Anna Patterson (NRHS). We thank them for their dedication to professional growth and for continually advocating for the essential role of school libraries in our students’ academic success.

Eric Minor, Technology Info. Sys. Tech. Competes in the National Esports Championship

Eric Minor, Technology Information Systems Tech, recently demonstrated his gaming expertise on a national stage, advancing to the Finals of the EA Sports College Football 25 tournament. As one of only four finalists in the competition, Minor traveled to Texas to compete at the legendary Cotton Bowl, solidifying his place among the best collegiate Esports players in the country. Minor’s success in this tournament not only highlights his personal achievement but also inspires students interested in the growing world of Esports. His journey to the Cotton Bowl is a motivating example for students who dream of competing in national tournaments, earning scholarships, or pursuing Esports careers.

Candance Walton, a dedicated and compassionate school social worker, has officially earned her license in clinical social work (LCSW). This achievement marks a significant milestone in her journey as a professional, and highlights her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of our students in Suffolk Public Schools.

Suffolk Public Schools Nutritional Services Will Participate in the 2024-2025 Virginia School Recipe Development Team

Suffolk Public Schools Nutritional Services, led by Dr. Lawrence Whiting, has been selected to join the 2024-2025 Virginia School Recipe Development Team, a collaborative initiative with the Virginia Department of Education and the Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs. This team aims to create standardized recipes that are nutritious, delicious, and aligned with USDA guidance while highlighting local agricultural products. Dr. Whiting and Angela Howell will represent SPS in this effort to improve school meals and showcase Virginia's agricultural heritage.

Division Superintendent Dr. John B Gordon, III, Joins The Network of Distinguished Educators

Dr. John B. Gordon, III was selected as one of 35 superintendents across the country to participate in the Network of Distinguished Educators. The mission of the Network is to convene, support, and elevate the work of some of our nation's most accomplished superintendents through research, professional learning, and case studies to serve as teaching tools addressing the challenges education leaders face today.
